Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the front office of the
Mine Action Service, Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions, within
the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in New York. The incumbent will
report directly to the Director, Mine Action Service.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be
responsible for the following duties:

Supports the Director of the United Nations Mine
Action Service in his/her functions, including by the provision of sound policy
advice on issues as appropriate;
·
Serves as a liaison with UNMAS office in Geneva and
other departments and agencies in New York and in the field, as well as the
diplomatic community.
·
Provides specialised technical support to the
Director in his/ her interactions with other UN entities by working closely
with liaison staff of senior officials of those entities.
·
Identifies, researches, analyses, prepares and/or
organises information and briefing materials for the Director to facilitate
decision-making and leadership in management strategic planning/review
processes and/or to prepare the Director's participation in meetings and
missions/key events.
·
Drafts speeches and/or design presentation
materials (including multi-media) for delivery by the Director in key events,
meetings and other external fora ensuring that UNMAS thinking, goals, objectives,
strategies and/or policies on UNMAS programs are appropriately reflected in
these materials
·
Provides assistance to the Director in the
strategic management of the Division, liaising closely with in-house Divisions,
sections and field offices as well as key partners and stakeholders.
·
Assist the Director in developing policies related
to UNMAS' service delivery, programme planning and operations and ensures
information about decisions taken is disseminated to staff and acted upon in a
timely and appropriate manner

Manages the office of the Director including the
effective maintenance of his/her calendar, dealing with and tracking
correspondence, calls and responses, preparing meeting notes, arranging duty
travel and completing miscellaneous administrative tasks
·
Oversees the preparation of various regular and
ad-hoc reports as required
·
Performs other assignment as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (i.e. Master's degree or
equivalent) in political or social science, international studies, law or any
other relevant field is required. A first-level university degree in
combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted
in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively
responsible experience in political affairs or related area is required.
Experience in peacekeeping, humanitarian affairs is required. Experience in
mine action is highly desirable. Qualifying years of experience are calculated
following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the
United Nations.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the
United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in written and
spoken English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an
assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
- Staff members are subject to the authority of the
Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff
are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in
accordance with established rules and procedures.
- This post is financed for a one year period. Extension of appointment will be subject to budgetary approval.
