Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship Program at CFR’s Offices in New York or Washington DC, USA



Stanton Foundation offers SNSF (Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowships) Program nuclear security fellowships to spend a period of twelve months at the Council on Foreign Relations’ (CFR) offices in New York or Washington DC, conducting policy-relevant research in the USA. Qualified candidates must be junior (non-tenured) faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or predoctoral candidates from any discipline who are working on a nuclear security related issue. The program is only open to US citizens and permanent residents who are eligible to work in the United States. CFR awards up to three fellowships annually. The program awards a stipend of $100,000 for junior (non-tenured) faculty; $75,000 for postdoctoral; and $50, 000 for predoctoral fellows.

Eligibility: The SNSF Program seeks to stimulate the development of the next generation of thought leaders in nuclear security. Qualified candidates must be junior (non-tenured) faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or predoctoral candidates from any discipline who are working on a nuclear security related issue. The program is only open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are eligible to work in the United States. CFR does not sponsor for visas.

Scholarship Description: Nuclear security is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. The spread of nuclear weapons to unstable and hostile states, the risk of conflict between nuclear armed nations, and the potential for terrorist groups to acquire nuclear arms all demand new thinking and creative policy solutions. The Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship (SNSF) Program, made possible by a generous grant from the Stanton Foundation, offers younger scholars studying nuclear security issues the opportunity to spend a period of twelve months at the Council on Foreign Relations’ (CFR) offices in New York or Washington, DC, conducting policy-relevant research.

Number of award (s): CFR awards up to three fellowships annually.

Duration of award (s): The duration of the fellowship is twelve months, preferably beginning in September.

What does it cover? The program awards a stipend of $100,000 for junior (non-tenured) faculty; $75,000 for postdoctoral; and $50,000 for predoctoral fellows. Payment will be made in twelve equal monthly installments.

Selection criteria: The fellowships will be awarded on the basis of academic and professional accomplishments and promise, and on the merits of the specific research projects proposed.

How to Apply: The mode of applying is via email. Interested candidates who meet the program’s eligibility requirements must submit an application form, a cover letter, a CV, and a proposal outlining the work proposed to conduct. Each applicant should arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent assessing the policy relevance of the applicant’s proposed project as well as the applicant’s qualifications for carrying it out.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is December 16, 2013.
