Fulbright Durham University Scholar Award for US Citizens in UK



The US-UK Fulbright Commission is funding award for US citizens at Durham University, UK. One award is granted each year for a period of 3-12 months to pursue research and/or teaching/lecturing. Applicants must hold or receive doctoral degree. The award covers monthly stipend, institutional fees, travel to/from the UK, accommodation and general maintenance costs, limited sickness and accident benefits. Applications should be submitted online.

• US citizen (resident anywhere except the United Kingdom), and
• hold or expect to receive a PhD (or equivalent professional training or experience) in a relevant area before departure to the UK.

Scholarship Description: Each year, one award is offered to a US citizen in support of research and/or teaching/lecturing in any subject, in any of (or a combination of) the Durham University research-active departments. The appointment will be for a period of 3-12 months. Candidates will be selected by the Fulbright Commission and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) to receive a grant to be used towards related travel and maintenance costs.

What does it cover? The award provides a monthly stipend of £2,500 paid in installments directly to the grantee. The first installment is typically given upon arrival in the UK. This funding is intended as a contribution towards any institutional fees, travel to/from the UK, accommodation and general maintenance costs while in the UK. Limited sickness and accident benefit coverage is also included.

Selection Criteria: The Fulbright Awards Programme is looking not only for academic excellence but also:
• demonstrable ambassadorial skills with evidence of cultural sensitivity and a genuine desire to learn more about the United Kingdom and share with British citizens aspects of American culture,
• experience and interest in a range of extracurricular and community activities,
• leadership potential, and
• a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and give back to your home country upon returning.


Notification: From November 2013 -January 2014, applications will be evaluated and short-listed candidates will be invited to interview. Telephone Interviews will be conducted on 16-24 January 2014 and applicants will be notified about results by March 2014.

How to Apply: The mode of applying is online. Applications are made online through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). Students will be able to log in and out of their application account and will not be required to complete the application in one sitting.
