AATJ Spring Bridging Scholarships for American Undergraduates in Japan



American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) is offering Bridging Scholarships for study abroad in Japan. Scholarships are offered to US undergraduate students majoring in any field of study. Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad. Applications for study in Japan for Spring 2014 should be submitted to AATJ by the deadline of October 8, 2013.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for undergraduate level.
Scholarship Provider: The Bridging Scholarship program is sponsored and funded by the US-Japan Bridging Foundation, through contributions from a number of corporations, private foundations and individual donors.
Scholarship can be taken at: Japan

Eligibility: -Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships.
-Japanese language study is not a prerequisite.
-Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be enrolled as undergraduates in a college or university in the United States before and during the time they are studying abroad.
- Students studying in Japan on summer programs are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: The students of USA can apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship Description: The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships.

Number of award(s): About 100 scholarships each year are awarded (Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships).

Duration of award(s): Scholarships are awarded for a semester or an academic year. Applicants’ terms of study in Japan should be at least three months in duration.

What does it cover? Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs).

Selection Criteria: Selection is made by a committee and is based on academic potential and financial need.

How to Apply:  The Bridging Scholarship application form is available in  MSWord Format  and PDFFormat. Applicants can download the word form fill it out on the computer, save it, print it, and send it via post it or students can download the PDF form to the computer, print it, fill it in and send it via post. Applicants should also submit the following to the AATJ office:
-A completed application form (three copies).The application form can be found at www.aatj.org/studyabroad/scholarships.html, filled out online, and downloaded and printed.
-A short essay (up to 500 words) explaining your interest in study abroad in Japan (three copies).
-An official transcript from your college or university.
-A letter of recommendation from someone who knows you and is knowledgeable about your abilities and potential, preferably a professor or instructor in your major course of study. This may either be submitted together with the application or sent separately by the recommender. Faxed or emailed letters will not be accepted.

Scholarship Application Deadline: Applications Deadline for Spring 2014 is October 8, 2013.
