This position is located in the News and Media Division (NMD) of the Department of Public Information (DPI). The incumbent reports to the Senior Editor of the English Press Unit of the Meetings Coverage Section of the Press Service.
Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Senior Editor of the English Press Unit, Meetings Coverage Section, Press Service, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:
Supervises pool of editorial clerks/proofreaders and assists the Senior Editor in assigning work to professional staff.
Assists the Senior Editor in determining professional and general service staffing requirements.
Ensures an effective work flow critical to efficient meetings coverage.
Responsible for testing, recruitment and orientation of professional and general service staff and for on-going training and performance evaluation of typists and proofreaders.
Supports the DPI Executive Office in the performance of administrative duties.
Manages, updates and further develops internal database.
Assists in design, development and maintenance of internet applications.
Competencies
Professionalism: Thorough knowledge of proofreading guidelines and style sheets; works accurately under pressure; conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; possesses excellent proofreading and editorial skills; thorough knowledge of UN editorial manual.
Communication: Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; speaks and writes clearly and effectively.
Planning and Organizing: Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.
Education
High school diploma or its minimum equivalent is required. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (UNASAT) at Headquarters or at a certified test centre at Offices Away from Headquarters.
Work Experience
Minimum of 7 years of specialized experience in a public communications environment, including experience in meetings coverage, or related area, as well as proofreading and word processing experience. Web development/administration skills required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Familiarity with other official UN language is highly desirable.
Assessment Method
Competency-based interview.
