Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Water and Sanitation Technician will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Water and Sanitation Technicians.)
• Manage contractors and oversee military engineering units, and supervise assigned staff.
• Locate viable water sources and abstraction points including surface (river, lake, steams) and ground water sources (wells, boreholes, infiltration galleries).
• Supervise drilling of wells and boreholes and construction of surface water intakes.
• Plan scheduled maintenance on all the installations and equipment related to water supply, sanitation and treatment systems.
• Oversee emergency works and repairs of various water supply, sanitation and treatment systems.
• Prepare and analyze the reports related to the performance of water equipment in the field including boreholes, pumps, main supply, storage tanks and distribution networks.
• Monitor, record and archive reports pertaining to inspection, service and repair of purification / water treatment plants and all other water related equipment.
• Monitor and ensure adequate stock levels of spare parts for water supply and sewerage works and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment, and provide lists of periodic requirement of same well in advance for the purpose of raising requisitions.
• Consolidate and review periodic chemical and bacteriological analysis of water and treated wastewater effluent and recommend improvements.
• Assist in preparation of scope of works for water and waste water systems by providing field based input.
• Assist in preparation of technical evaluations.
• Approve work orders and initiate requisitions as and when required.
• Coordinate works as necessary with engineering counterparts in specialized technical areas.
• Provide guidance and practical hands-on training to staff working under his/her supervision.
• May act as a head of the Unit.
• Perform other duties as and when required including emergency call-out and standby duties. Work implies frequent interaction with the following: Chief/Supervisors of other Units, staff of the Section. Local and international contractors including the contractor’s technical personnel. Civilian and Military UN personnel throughout the Mission. Results Expected: Effective management and supervision of engineering projects related to water and sanitation, and their preventive maintenance programme. Tradesmen and staff under direct supervision are well guided and able to efficiently perform work assigned. Water, sanitation, well construction and maintenance projects progress in accordance with planned schedules. Site safety procedures are known to personnel for the performance of their assigned duties.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Engineering Technology or vocational certificate/ diploma in Water resources, Water sample analysis, installation, operation and maintenance of water equipment.
Work Experience
At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of Water supply and Sanitation. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) years for candidates who possess a relevant first level university degree
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is required. Knowledge of a second UN language is an advantage and sometimes a requirement. Fluency in the local language may sometimes be required.
