Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Engineering Technician will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Engineering Technicians.)
• Exercise overall supervision over the efficient operation of the MissionĂ¢€™s buildings, facilities and services, including, but not limited to, generators, sanitation, drainage, water supply, electricity supply, air conditioning, waste disposal , and security facilities.
• Apply commonly used engineering practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the construction or repair of buildings, roads, bridges, field defenses, and other related structures and facilities in the field.
• Involved in conducting preliminary site assessments to obtain information such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
• Involved in developing technical data regarding materials, size dimensions, quantities and costs to be incorporated into formal specifications.
• Evaluate engineering work-requests and assign individuals or work-teams to carry out building maintenance and repair tasks, as required.
• Plan, coordinate and implement repair/maintenance works for the MissionĂ¢€™s buildings, facilities and services.
• Be fully involved in the planning, design, and supervision of new construction projects, including developing statement of works, bills of quantities and drawings as part of a team.
• Carry out scheduled and preventive maintenance of all structures in the Mission.
• Be responsible for the provision and installation of necessary utilities.
• Periodically inspect ongoing projects.
• Perform other duties as required. Work implies frequent interaction with the following: Chief/Supervisors of other Units, staff of the Section. Local and international contractors including the contractors technical personnel. Civilian and Military UN personnel throughout the Mission.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate/diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, construction, project management or in a relevant engineering discipline. Recognised and valid License in one of the trades (carpentry, plumbing, welding, or similar) is an asset.

Work Experience
At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in the construction, engineering, facilities field. Previous experience in an international or UN peacekeeping or other field operation highly desirable. Extensive knowledge of the UN rules, regulations and working practices pertaining to field missions is an advantage. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) years for candidates who possess a relevant first level University degree.

Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is required. Knowledge of a second UN language is an advantage and sometimes a requirement. Fluency in the local language may be required.

Other Skills
