This position is located in the Global Data Services Unit, Statistical Services Branch, Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Statistician reports to the Chief of the Statistical Services Branch.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the statistician will be responsible for the following duties:
Initiates and co-ordinates the development of appropriate methods for aggregating and sourcing relevant data. Design and improve appropriate data dissemination strategies to improve service to users.
Ensures the quality and timeliness of available data and metadata disseminated through the UNdata portal for accuracy, consistency and comparability; enriches its content by adding new databases, both national and international;
Supervises and contributes to the development of relevant databases, web publishing tools and other software for collection, storage and distribution of statistical data.
Liaises with data providing partners; also communicates with and provides feedback to users; promotes the portal within users' community.
Organizes and participates in meetings on data dissemination, promoting data dissemination best practices.
Undertakes methodological research with regard to standards on concepts, definitions and classifications, especially in the area of data exchange and data dissemination, to assist countries and other constituents in strengthening their statistical development.
Provides guidance and advice to other departments, field experts, etc., in the planning, operation and evaluation of statistical programmes and projects especially in relating to data dissemination.
Plans and co-ordinates seminars, workshops, expert meetings, etc..
Plans, organizes, manages and supervises the work of the unit assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data; in particular experience in managing complex multi-sectoral statistical data bases is required. Knowledge and experience in the broad range of data bases of the UN system and of SDMX (Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange programme) is desirable. Experience in managing teams and supervising individuals is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the official languages of the Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a substantive assessment, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
