This position is located in the General Assembly Affairs Branch, General Assembly and ECOSOC Affairs Division in the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the General Assembly Affairs Branch.

Responsibilities
Under direct supervision of the Chief of the General Assembly Affairs Branch, the incumbent:
Assists in the planning, coordinating and supervising the organization and provision of Secretariat services for the regular, special and emergency special sessions of the General Assembly, its General Committee, high-level meetings, commemorations and other special events and meetings;
Plans and supervises the preparation of procedural notes; prepares documents and other materials related to the follow-up activities of the General Assembly;
Reviews and monitors activities, trends and developments in the General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies and analyses and assesses political and related events within the assigned area with a view to providing early advice to the Chief of the Branch relevant to the work of the Branch;
Prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high profile matters of concern to the General Assembly or other bodies;
Prepares summaries of meetings of the General Assembly and arranges and participates in negotiations/consultations;
Drafts notes, background papers, talking points and other correspondence for senior UN officials and maintain contacts with delegates and staff in other UN offices and departments, and other international organizations;
Liaise with the Office of the President of the General Assembly, and provide direct support on issues related to the institutional memory of the General Assembly.
Carry out administrative functions and perform other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, or related area, of which at least five years is within the UN system or similar environment. Experience in dealing with procedures, policies and practices of the General Assembly, its subsidiary bodies or other intergovernmental bodies, is required.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable.

Assessment Method
Competency-based interview which may be preceded by a substantive test.

Special Notice
