Responsibilities:
The Infectious Diseases (ID) division is recruiting a Senior Program Officer (SPO) for the Pneumonia team. The SPO - Pneumonia reports to the Program Strategy Team Lead (PST Lead) for the Pneumonia team and is located in Seattle.
The SPO will be responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of foundation investments (grants and contracts) in support of the pneumonia strategy. The focus of this portfolio will largely be on vaccine development and clinical research in support of vaccine development and vaccine introduction for pneumonia.
As part of this responsibility, the SPO will manage the relationship with grantees and contractors to achieve the foundation's desired impact, provide project briefings and updates to foundation leadership, and represent the foundation in meetings with external stakeholders and partners, as well as at scientific conferences and workshops.
Specifically, the SPO will be responsible for the following:
- Identify promising areas of research and programming to fill key gaps in our knowledge related to pneumonia, and develop or guide development of related Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
- Provide strategic guidance in crafting grants and contracts that require complex research or analytics.
- Making and managing grants for product development and clinical trials in support of product development for pneumonia.
- Provide input and participate in technical meetings; provide programmatic expertise in pneumonia
- Identify & cultivate partners to build coalitions and achieve objectives.
- Manage these partnerships and grantee relationships to achieve impact. (For example, conduct site visits, convene meetings of key stakeholders, monitor and evaluate components of grants.)
- Serve as partner and resource to grantees to achieve strategic objectives.
- Attend meetings to represent the foundation and shape global, regional and country agendas around in line with foundation strategy.
- Actively search for opportunities to disseminate knowledge and partner products to leverage and expand their influence.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a global expert in infectious diseases with recognized medical, scientific, management and strategic planning skills. The ideal candidate will have lived and worked in various regions of the world for a period of time giving him/her an appreciation for the complexities of implementing field-based research and translating research findings into effective programs. A history of successfully working with the private sector would be a plus.
The candidate should have:
- An MD and/or PhD in a related field, preferred.
- A minimum of 15 years experience in the design and implementation of field projects, operations research or clinical research projects, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, controlled trials, or in the conception, design and development of field oriented programs ideally focused on improving interventions, strategies and programs that have significantly reduced the morbidity and mortality associated with pneumonia and related diseases
- Extensive field experience in target geographies (Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia) preferred.
- Solid understanding of the realities and complexities of “in country” interventions.
- Proven ability to lead and influence data-driven strategy planning and implementation.
- Demonstrated excellence in scientific writing and data analysis, written and oral communication skills, and experience advocating and communicating with a broad and diverse audience.
- Experience in a role requiring collaboration in a complex internal organization and with external organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with efficiency, diplomacy, and flexibility particularly as part of a team effort.
Experience in working on teams with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
- Ability to travel up to 30% domestically and internationally.
