Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Global Compact Office in New York.
The incumbent reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Executive Director of the GCO, the main functions assigned to the Special Assistant are the following:
With the support of the Team Assistant, manage the Executive Director's agenda; evaluate and keep track of important events and meetings, including the preparation of briefing documents, statements, papers, policies, etc.; liaise with relevant internal teams and external partners as necessary.
With the support of the Team Assistant, reviews and analyses all substantive correspondence, reports, and other documentation addressed to the Executive Director (ED); drafts correspondence, notes, memorandums, and responses to queries on behalf of the Executive Director; performs quality control on documentation produced within the Global Compact Office, before submission to the Executive Director;
Brings to the attention of the Executive Director (ED) all matters requiring his personal attention, and assists in formulating options and solutions to handle such matters; Provides support to the Executive Director. Keeps abreast of developments which are of interest and relevance to the Executive Director and provides substantive support accordingly;

Assists the ED with the Global Compact Board and Donor Group through the following activities:
a) coordinates office-wide preparation of briefing notes and other relevant background materials on donor relations and the Global Compact Board;
b) manages and coordinates feedback from the Donor Group and the Global Compact Board members and donors; and contributes to preparing responses to the requests and inputs provided; and
c) provides support for Donor Group meetings and the Global Compact Board with the aim of strengthening GCO governance and donor relations.

In cooperation with the Executive Office/DM, effectively coordinates actions relative to administrative processes and actions, e.g., recruitment, performance appraisals, job classification, travel, consultancies, etc.
Oversees the preparation of the Executive Director's official travel, including the timely preparation of briefing materials, and talking points, etc.

Supervises General Service staff working on GCO's administrative and operational matters; provides guidance on budget and HR matters.
Performs other special assignments as requested by the Executive Director.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following:
Officers in relevant Secretariat units, representatives and officials in national governments and international organizations, consultants, business executives working on corporate responsibility, and academics.

Results Expected:
Assists the Executive Director in respect to work agenda, meetings, programme planning and monitoring, etc, including written contributions as required, e.g., briefing minutes, background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, etc. Develops and maintains effective working relationships. Promulgates coherent policies and consistent adherence to these by clients. Efficiently utilizes resources.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, administration or related area. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a substantive assessment, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
