This position is located in the General Assembly and ECOSOC Affairs Division (GAEAD), in Department for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Management, New York. The incumbent reports to the Director of the Division.
Responsibilities
Under direct supervision of the Director, the incumbent reviews and monitors activities, trends and developments in the General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies and analyses and assesses political and related events within the assigned area with a view to provide early advice to the Director of the Division relevant to the Division's work. He/She prepares analytical reports and papers on sensitive and high profile matters of concern to the General Assembly or other bodies; prepares summaries of meetings of the General Assembly with a special focus on UN reform, including on the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly and Security Council reform; arranges and participates in negotiations/consultations, and prepares the draft report of the Ad hoc Working Group on the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly. He/She furthermore participates in the organization and supervision of other Secretariat services required by these bodies, drafts procedural notes for the Chairs/Facilitators and participates in meetings. He/She will draft notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials and maintains contacts with delegates, staff in other UN offices and departments, and other international organizations. He/She will liaise with the Office of the President of the General Assembly, and provide direct support on issues related to the institutional memory of the General Assembly. The incumbent will also participate in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise, and carry out administrative functions and perform other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, or related area, of which at least five years within the UN system or similar environment. Experience in dealing with procedures, policies and practices of the General Assembly, its subsidiary bodies or other intergovernmental bodies is required. Familiarity with Lotus Notes is highly desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable.
Assessment Method
Competency-based interview which may be preceded by a substantive test.
Special Notice
