Under the overall direction of the Assistant-Secretary-General for Human Resources Management, the Medical Director will manage the Medical Services Division in the Office of Human Resources Management.
Responsibilities
The Medical Director:
1. Acts as principal adviser on all matters related to staff health, medical care and welfare of staff of the United Nations, including peacekeeping missions worldwide and those of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS);
2, Oversees the work of the Medical Services Division In New York, including: medical examinations and clearances, walk-in clinic, travel clinic, health promotion activities, enhancement of healthy working environment and 24/7 crisis intervention emergency response, as well as performance of all medico-administrative functions; and is responsible for the managerial tasks necessary for the efficient and effective functioning of the Medical Services Division, including preparation of budgets, reporting on budget performance, individual and team performance management, staff development and career support;
3. Provides leadership in the continuous assessment of needs, development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and/or updating of policies, procedures, standards, protocols, guidelines and emergency plans; and coordinates health promotion programs and initiatives in conjunction with managers, human resources staff and other key partners;
4. Provides professional and technical advice and oversight for the work of all United Nations healthcare facilities and UN examining physicians, worldwide, to ensure staff access to health care in all field duty stations.
5. Acts as medical adviser to the Advisory Board on Compensation Claims (ABCC) and the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Board (UNJSPB);
6. Plans and implements a program of strategic change for the management of healthcare in the UN system, taking account of the increasing field presence of UN staff, and including representation of healthcare issues as needed on inter-agency governance bodies, including the High Level Committee on Management, the UN Medical Directors Working Group, the Human Resources Network, and the Inter Agency Security
Management Network.

Education
Advanced degree in medicine, with specialisation in internal medicine and/or occupational health. A qualification in travel medicine and/or public health is an advantage. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
Extensive professional knowledge and experience, typically acquired over 15 years in clinical, preventive and travel medicine. Proven managerial skills in managing both budgetary matters and human resources in progressively responsible positions in hospitals, occupational health facilities and/or international organizations.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required; knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
