Mary Morrow/Edna Richards Scholarship in North Carolina

The Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship was named in memory of Mary Frank Morrow, who served as the first president of the North Carolina Classroom Teachers Association, and Edna Cotton Richards, an outstanding leader within the North Carolina Teachers Association and the North Carolina Association of Educators.

In 1931 the first local unit of CTA was organized with Miss Morrow as president. The state association was formed the following year. The name of Mary Frank Morrow was placed in the North Carolina Education Hall of Fame in 1966. The plaque may be seen in the lobby of the NCAE Center in Raleigh.

Mrs. Edna Cotton Richards was appointed Executive Secretary of the Division of Classroom Teachers of the North Carolina Teachers Association in 1959. She went on to hold many leadership and advisory positions within the NCAE and NEA until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Richards was a lifelong teacher and leader.

Both women, through their diligent work and dedication to the teaching profession, led exemplary lives. This scholarship honors their distinguished careers.

HOW TO APPLY
Applicants must be North Carolina residents enrolled in a teacher-education program. They must be in the JUNIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE and willing to teach in the public schools of North Carolina for at least two (2) years following graduation.

All applications should be made through a college or university. Preference may be given to children of NCAE members and to members of the Student NCAE as part of the selection process. Other selection criteria will be based on character, personality, scholastic achievement, evidence of promise as a teacher, and the financial need of the applicant. Other individuals meeting the above qualifications may request application forms from the State NCAE office.

All required materials must be postmarked no later than January 9, 2012.

Applications will be considered and judged by the Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship Committee, after which recipients will be notified and recognized at the NCAE State Convention awards banquet.
