The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) seeks an experienced, innovative and intellectually-driven media relations professional to raise the visibility of the Foundation and communicate the impact of its programs and research to multiple external audiences. The new director will be responsible for creating enhanced outreach efforts utilizing traditional
and social media - initiating strategic media partnerships and expanding relationships with national and regional media representatives, policy makers and thought leaders.

COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's emergence as the nation's largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health. The Foundation has embarked on a comprehensive, enterprise-wide communications effort, modernizing its media and communications outreach with the aim of projecting a more clearly defined image of RWJF's mission, programs, impact and trajectory. Under the leadership of a new vice president, the Communications department is leading this effort by collecting stories from the Foundation's grantees and disseminating these successes locally and nationally through both traditional and social media channels.

This is an exciting time for a successful media relations professional to join RWJF and serve as the key media liaison, spokesperson, and story-teller. S/he will partner with the Foundation's staff, national grantees and retained PR firms to identify and craft themes, research and projects into compelling news stories for the media and other external audiences. This is a pivotal moment to elevate the national presence of the Foundation – which will be the overarching goal of the new director of media relations.

DIRECTOR OF MEDIA RELATIONS
The director of media relations will lead the Foundation's media outreach efforts. Reporting directly to the new vice president for Communications, the director of media relations will also oversee executive speaking engagements and provide media training for executive staff members. S/he will blend the creative use of social media along with traditional media channels to reach our targeted audiences. The director will work with the president/CEO and two senior vice presidents to identify executive speaking opportunities and will be responsible for the logistics surrounding any outside speaking engagements. S/he will manage two media relations associates. Critical to the success of this role will be the director's ability to tap into his/her high level contacts and media experience – preferably at a top tier media outlet. S/he will have a history of working with leading media, developing materials for external audiences, overseeing executive speaking engagements and managing social media operations.

Responsibilities

* Support the vice president for Communications, the associate vice president for Communications and president/CEO in accomplishing annual Foundation goals and priorities. Manage the Foundation's media operations team, overseeing a staff of two associates. Develop fresh content for the new RWJF website that will launch in September. Coordinate with the senior director for Communications, who oversees Web operations and Creative Services, to maintain a daily central editorial calendar which tracks all out-going communications from the Foundation on a daily basis. Work closely with the seven program teams, the embedded communications officers and colleagues in the research and evaluation department to identify successful projects, new research and emerging themes to highlight with the media. Initiate and lead desk-side media briefings for senior staff to highlight new research results and major program advances. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Director of Media Relations

Supervise the work of several national public relations firms who are assigned to enterprise communications – helping to pitch national stories and develop compelling briefing materials for the media. Cultivate relationships with key health and health care reporters in both print and broadcast media. Seek out opportunities for senior management speeches and maintain an executive speaking calendar. Coordinate periodic media training for senior staff. Manage a small stable of outside speechwriters and coordinate review and copyediting of materials provided by speechwriters. Help build and reinforce an organizational culture in which all staff members embrace their role as 'brand ambassadors'.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree and at least eight years of experience working at one or more highly successful and respected organizations and/or media outlets as a journalist or a media relations professional. S/he will possess superior writing and interpersonal skills, a track record of team-oriented project management and the ability to embody the mission of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A collegial, collaborative and accessible leadership style, well suited to management in a highly regarded organization, is a prerequisite as is the creativity, energy and political savvy needed to introduce and champion new ideas.

The director is expected to have the following personal characteristics and professional experience:

* A demonstrated track record of developing relationships with and conducting outreach to national and local media, preferably with journalists who cover health, medicine, science, or public policy. The ideal candidate will possess a mix of successful, professional achievements and the aptitude to learn and adapt to the culture of the Foundation. Highly developed interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work in a complex team matrix environment. S/he must be collegial and congenial, possessing impeccable writing and oral communication skills, as well as an ability to synthesize and translate complicated materials into clear and simple language.

An intellectually curious and creative mind with a track record of collaboration and innovation. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in developing high-level media projects from conception to completion. S/he will be able to handle multiple priorities simultaneously and have excellent time management skills. Computer skills, media-specific technical skills and the ability to use analytics to inform decisions are hallmarks for success at the Foundation. A track record of successful team management (on a full-time or project-based basis), planning and organizational skills, the ability and willingness to delegate, as well as the ability to control the quality of the product produced by his/her team. A background in or experience with using, developing and adequately utilizing social media is highly desired. While the ideal candidate may have limited personal engagement with social media, s/he needs to be familiar with multiple platforms of social media and have some experience in leveraging these outlets. The traits of honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, and perspective; a very strong work ethic, supported by commitment and follow-through. Travel is expected in this position.
