The position is located in the Meetings Management Section, Central Planning and Coordination Service (CPCS), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management in New York. The Chief reports to the Chief of CPCS.

Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following.
_ Participate in and provide recommendations on the development of policies and procedures relating to all aspects of conference servicing in the planning and servicing of United Nations conferences and meetings held at and away from established headquarters;
_ Plan and oversee the management of activities undertaken by the Section;Liaise with other organisations of the United Nations System, donors and agencies as appropriate.
_ Manage, supervise and carry out the work programme of the Section under his/her responsibility. Co-coordinate the work carried out by the Section including preparation, planning and implementation of the Calendar of Conferences and Meetings of the United Nations; provide programmatic/substantive reviews of drafts prepared by others.
_ Provide substantive input in the preparation of and draft reports for presentation to intergovernmental bodies including the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budget Questions, the Committee on Conferences, the Fifth Committee of the General Assembly and other policy-making organs, as appropriate.
_ Ensure that the outputs produced by the Section maintain high-quality standards; that reports are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data. Ensure that all outputs produced by the Section under his/her supervision meet required standards before completion to ensure they comply with the relevant mandates.
_Guide the development and supervise the maintenance of dynamic gMeets and gDoc connection which will, inter alia, support PaperSmart meetings and help identify and realize related efficiency gains. Represent the Organization at inter-agency meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive issues.
_ Participate in international, regional or national meetings and provide programmatic/substantive expertise on relevant issues, or hold programmatic/substantive and organisational discussions with representatives of other institutions. Serve as Secretary of the Committee on Conferences and support the Coordinator of the item on Pattern of Conferences in the Fifth Committee. Serve as member of Business Process Team for development and upgrade as needed in computerized meetings management programmes at Headquarters.

PRPFESSIONLISM: Comprehensive knowledge of United Nations practises and procedures pertaining to the planning and servicing of meetings; expert knowledge in planning, coordination and delivery of conference services in an international and multicultural context; ability to contribute to policy-making and problem solving and providing policy guidelines in the field of responsibility; ability to produce reports and papers on technical issues and to review and edit the work of others; ability to perform functions of Secretary to inter governmental body (Committee on Conferences); Planning and organizing: Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor the work of the section requiring an in-depth understanding of its strategic direction and ability to integrate the work of the Section into the Service's/Department's work programme;

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in languages, communication, international affairs, public administration, management, social sciences or related field. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in planning and coordinating delivery of conference services, including 5 years at the international level or in multicultural institutions. Management and leadership experience in coordinating international conferences with the United Nations system organizations is highly desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

Assessment Method
Competency-based interview preceded by a substantive test.
