Manufacturers want to sell stuff. Consumers want to buy stuff. Search advertising works very well when you know what you are looking for and can express clear intent in the form of keywords. We are building technology that helps manufacturers find consumer who will likely want and love their products. We believe consumers will welcome introductions to products (ads) that are perceived as ‘cool’ by them and that they are delighted to have ‘discovered’. Our technology makes serendipity on the web reliable.
Delivering the right product introduction (ad) experience has the potential to multiply the revenue we receive per impression by 50x or more and drastically reshape the role ads play in Microsoft’s online presence and overall business. Project Normandy is all about being “passively relevant to the user’s intent and interests”. It is an ad technology that provides a true replacement for the passive product discover that was delivered through broadcast media in the 20th century.
The team was recently formed and is currently staffing up. We’re looking for a super-smart, passionate veteran software engineer to help us develop our the algo for our graph based targeting system. This system will ingest graph feeds and construct graphs from raw data. We will then distill intent from the graphs by combining and filtering them. This is a rare opportunity to be there from the beginning. If you’re ready for the challenge, come join us!
You will be responsible for designing and implementing algo systems that target ads based on the consumers relationship graphs with the goal of increasing consumer engagement and decreasing their annoyance. You will also provide technical leadership to the other members of the feature team. You will work across the server technology stack from data ingestion to ranking/targeting pipelines to integration with the existing services within Bing, both in search and ads. Some of the key challenges for the feature area are ensuring that:
- We consistently and accurately match the graph content to the appropriate entities, if they already exist within Bing’s index.
- Deliver ads to the Bing verticals in a manner that enhances rather than detracts from the user experience
- New types of data and new data providers can be added to the system efficiently
- Experimenting with new algorithms to mine and combine the graphs will be a formal goal, which must allow us to rapidly try and learn
For team culture, you will fit right in if…
- You are passionate about delivering great user experiences. Whether someone works on the lowest level of the stack or the highest and whether they are new college graduate or a seasoned veteran, everyone on the team is expected to constantly push to make the experience the best it can be.
- You thrive in an ambiguous, start-up like environment. Responsibilities between dev, test, and PM will blur. Everyone will need to stretch beyond their core role to ensure the team as a whole succeeds.
- As a senior member of the team, you have not only excellent technical skills but also a keen desire and demonstrated ability to make those around you better.
3+ years of experience in machine learning, advertising and/or web technologies
2+ years of managing, processing, and analyzing large quantities of data configured into a graph are all pluses.
BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience is required.
The most critical components however are the ambition to deliver world changing products and the smarts to do it.
